Advice on the protection of ASEAN GIs in existing and potential export markets

This activity is aimed at enhancing the capacity of the productive sector in the ASEAN countries to compete in external markets through the use of protected geographical indications to identify the origin of their products.

As from 2013, the project organizes dissemination activities in the forms of open seminars to interested ASEAN countries and regional workshops to provide advice to ASEAN producers and competent authorities on the protection of ASEAN GIs in existing and potential export markets.  In addition, assistance is given for the registration of ASEAN GIs in Europe.

2013

In this context, an open seminar concerning GI protection and requirements in the EU and ASEAN took place in Hanoi, Vietnam, in May 2013. This event was open to AMSs officials responsible for geographical indications and participants from Vietnam´s productive sector. Representatives from the EU Delegations to Bangkok and Hanoi and representatives from the EU-funded MUTRAP IV project also participated.

The seminar on GIs ran for one and a half days, during which the GI experts from the ASEAN national IP Offices were invited to make presentations on their respective GI registration systems and to explain how GIs could be protected in ASEAN. A European expert introduced the registration and protection system in the European Union and complemented it with the analysis of a practical example of registration of GIs in the EU. These one-day seminars focussed on providing information on a wide range of topics pertaining to the concept of GIs and their benefit, the main elements of a GI scheme, GI specification and the socio-economic impact for the country as well as the GIs control system. The seminars included a question-and-answer session on identifying GI products, means of protection and its benefits.

In addition, the project participated with a speaker at the open GI Seminar organised by the Malaysian authorities in Alor Setar, Kadah on 6 April 2014. The Seminar gathered officials from Government Authorities in charge of GI promotion, representatives from enterprises, producer associations and traders. The ECAP Project Leader introduced topics related to the EU Experience on the protection and promotion of GIs.

Upon a request from the Government of Cambodia, the project provided specific support for the protection of “Kampot pepper” as a geographical indication in the European Union.  The project provided for the sound preparation of the materials leading to the filing of an application to register Kampot pepper as a protected geographical indication (PGI) in the EU.

2015

The project will continue to be available to provide similar advice to producers of GI products from other interested ASEAN countries.
