ASEAN common classification database of goods and services for the registration of marks

This activity consists in building a database of the terms accepted by the participating ASEAN IP Offices to identify goods and services for the purposes of the registration of trade marks and a search and classification tool providing access to that database.  This tool should help ensure the correct classification of such goods and services in accordance with the International Classification (Nice Classification) thus improving the quality of the services provided by the ASEAN trade mark offices in this field.

2013

As stipulated in the project Annual Work Plan 2013, the Project Management Team prepared a list of terms in the English language that could constitute the initial content of such database.  The list comprises all the terms contained in the latest version of the Alphabetical List of the Nice Classification (Edition 10-2014) plus additional terms accepted both by WIPO and other major trade mark offices, as well as additional terms of particular interest to the ASEAN countries, in particular the ASEAN list of ethnic goods developed under initiative 3 of the ASEAN IPR Action Plan 2011-2015.

2014

The project continued to provide assistance in the identification of terms in English that would constitute the initial content of the ASEAN database of classified goods and services for the registration of marks (ASEAN TMclass). In this context, the project organized two consultation meetings with the participation of officials from all the ASEAN IP Offices to make further progress in the identification of such terms.  The meetings also considered further steps to be taken regarding the translation and validation of the database terms in other ASEAN languages.
