Information sharing activities for ASEAN IP Offices on innovative initiatives to improve and promote trade mark and design services to the business community

This activity is aimed at improving the knowledge of the ASEAN IP Offices about latest developments and innovative initiatives to improve and promote trade mark and design services by IP Offices.

 

2014

 

To that effect, the project provided for the organization of an ASEAN-EUIPO High Level Consultation Meeting with a focus on exchanging views and information on modern and common approaches to trade mark and design services to the business community.

 

In this context, on 26-28 May 2014 EUIPO received the visit of 23 delegates of the ten ASEAN countries who attended an ASEAN-EUIPO Heads of IP Offices Meeting.  The Heads of the IP Offices of the ten ASEAN countries, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, together with representatives of the ASEAN Secretariat and the European Commission met with EUIPO Executive Director and adopted a joint summary of the meeting.

2015

 

The project has provisioned for the organisation of two Consultation Meetings on Trade Marks and one Consultation Meeting on Industrial Designs.

 

The first of the Consultation Meetings on Trade Marks provisioned for this year has taken place in Bangkok, Thailand, from 16 to 18 March. It was held back to back with the third AWGIPC TM Task Force meeting, as well as with the second ECAP IT Consultation Meeting, and discussed topics related to ASEAN TMclass, other trade mark IT tools, and other trademark-related issues.

 

The second of the Consultation Meetings on Trade Marks has taken place in Hanoi, Vietnam, from 11 to 13 November. It was held back to back with the fourth AWGIPC TM Task Force meeting, as well as with the third ECAP IT Consultation Meeting. Participants shared information and defined the steps forward concerning trademark and IT related initiatives under the AWP 2015 aimed at enhancing the delivery of trademark services to the business community.

The Design Consultation Meeting that took place in Langkawi, Malaysia, from 2 to 5 June 2015, provided for a platform to discuss matters related to the enhancement of industrial design administration in the ASEAN countries, in particular the analysis of the first draft of the ASEAN Common Guidelines on industrial design examination.

 

The meeting provided for an opportunity to define final steps in preparation of the ASEAN Designview launch and recommendations on activities related to accession to the Hague Agreement by ASEAN Member States.

Furthermore, building on the outcomes of the First ASEAN-EUIPO Heads of IP Offices meeting held in 2014, the project provided for the organization of the Second ASEAN-EUIPO High Level Consultation Meeting with a focus on addressing office priorities and strategies as well as to exchange views on innovative initiatives regarding office management and the provision of trademark and design services to the business community.

 

In this context, on 2 October 2015 EUIPO received the visit of 18 delegates of the ten ASEAN countries who attended this Second ASEAN-EUIPO Heads of IP Offices Meeting.  The Heads of the IP Offices of the ten ASEAN countries, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, together with a representative of the ASEAN Secretariat met with EUIPO Executive Director and adopted a joint summary of the meeting.

 

This document acknowledges the importance of trademarks, industrial designs and geographical indications in the economies of the ASEAN region and the European Union and the essential role of these IP rights in ensuring that ASEAN and European businesses continue to flourish.

 

It also appreciates the fact that the ASEAN Economic Ministers, at their 47th Meeting held on 22nd August 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, recognized with satisfaction the work done by the ASEAN Member States in the field of IP particularly in the context of the ECAP III Phase II, such as the adoption of Common Guidelines on Substantive Examination, the finalization of the ASEAN List of Goods and Services and the launch of on-line search tools, namely, ASEAN TMview, ASEAN TMclass and ASEAN Designview.
