Training of SME trainers

This activity is aimed at enhancing the capacity of SME trainers from ASEAN countries to effectively promote the use of brand-related IP tools by SMEs within their business strategies, in line with Strategic Goal 3 of the ASEAN IPR Action Plan 2011-2015.


To that effect, the project provided, by means of a regional workshop, for specialized training on IP tools for brand creation, protection and management to ASEAN officials having responsibility for SME promotion in their respective countries (SME trainers).

The workshop was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, “country leader” for enhancing the IP capability of SMEs within ASEAN, on 8-9 October 2013. The event was hosted by the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) and attended by officials from the ASEAN IP Offices and representatives from SME promotion agencies in their respective countries, both having responsibility for business development and SME awareness.


The workshop focused on trademarks, industrial designs and geographical indications as IP tools for brand creation, protection and management in the ASEAN region and abroad. It provided the opportunity to participants to learn about the ASEAN countries’ respective IP promotion plans for SMEs and to share information concerning tools and other databases available for brand protection/management. 


The event also provided for the identification and exchange of views regarding best practices in relation to IP awareness and introduced SME business networks in the region and abroad. The train the trainers approach set up the basis for further dissemination of information and knowledge for the future.
