EU-ASEAN Workshop on Data Protection (Pharmaceuticals), Bangkok, 29-30 April 2004
This event deals explores implications of yet another important branch of intellectual property. Unlike trade secrets which a company can protect, a pharmaceutical company is required to submit test data in the process of developing a product to national health authorities for approval. Pharmaceutical companies are thus concerned with the protection of such data in the hand of health authorities. Article 39.3 of TRIPs, the international agreement on intellectual property, prescribes the protection of such data ?against unfair commercial use.?
During the workshop, European experts will elaborate on data protection rules and practices as well as the approval process for pharmaceutical products in Europe. At the same time, representatives from ASEAN national health authorities, pharmaceutical industry, and other stake holders will offer an overview of the issue and the intellectual property angles involved in their countries. The importance of generic drug industry in ASEAN is also on the agenda.
